Fiction writers, it’s rumored, have a harder time building a blog platform. Especially unknown fiction writers, like myself. Until recently, I didn’t know what a platform was or why I needed one. (And in case you are a newbie to the marketing world like me, I’ll save you the angst and tell you: a platform is your writing focus and how you use it to connect with others).
Non-fiction writers have the luxury of having their platforms built in . . . experts on domestic abuse, pregnancy, or gluten-free living, for example, write what they know to those that need to know it.
I write books about things like Gnomes and Nephilum. What’s the longevity of a blog about those elusive creatures going to look like? It could well become the impetus for new nicknames along the lines of “crazy-cat lady.” No. These are not topics for the long haul.
And so, I prayed to the Maker for wisdom. He graciously gave it.
A friend handed me a book on art, specifically writing. Walking on Water by Madeleine L’Engle proved so highlighter-worthy that I had to order my own copy and mark it into neon-yellow glory.
The frothy clouds of Texas parted and a slice of autumn sunshine splashed across this gem of a book . . . (Mumford and Sons was probably playing in the background for added affect) and the Knowing settled in.
What did I know?
That a blog that furthered the writing process could serve to inspire and help other writers and readers alike. Working through other great authors’ works could only serve to strengthen my skill and fuel my passion for “Infusing the ordinary with the Divine.” Sort of a word-lovers devotional. Optimistically perfect.
So. Here we are. All three of us.
You: the kind and curious person who took time out of your busy day to see what’s going on over here. Me: the novice blogger—you can call me Heather. And, for now, Madeleine L’Engle and her treasure of a book.
Blogpost #2 will set sail with a quote from Walking on Water, and some thoughts from yours truly. That just leaves the third person in this cozy equation—you! Won’t you chime in and make this a conversation we can all benefit from? Let’s work through this book (not paragraph by paragraph, mind you) and see what we can learn together. There will also be the occasional guest post and book trivia/reviews for a smidge of variety. Oh, and I promise not to overload your inbox. Once a week is my goal as I try to balance other writing endeavors with this one.
Do you have any suggestions on future books that would be good for discussion? If so, please leave it in a comment so I can check it out!
P.S. When you sign up to follow the Tethered Together blog via RSS, you’ll get the first chapter of my forthcoming novel The Tethered World before the book is available to buy. If you prefer not to use the RSS, you may still get the first chapter by going to my website: Phantasmagorical Phiction, and clicking on “Get Chapter One for Free” button.
Good luck with your new blog. You’re at the experimental stage where you’ll be testing all sorts of ideas. At least that’s what I did. In fact, after over 4 years I’m still experimenting.

Tossing It Out
Hey Susan! It’s been too long 🙂 Busy lives! Yes, Amy still has her blog and yes, Weebly sight is stagnating but not quite moon dust. Have added a button to go to my new website. Have an author interview coming up on another blog…I’ll get the details out soon!
Oh, and I wish I could meet you at Starbucks for a long chat while refueling 🙂
Well . . . whoopee! Love the new writing-focused blog. Will Amy still be keeping her blog too? And what about the Tethered World Weebly site? Is it fading into moon dust?
I’ve been off the grid all month. Going home (Lord willing) this afternoon after DD and hubby return. They got “outta Dodge” (i.e. Chicago) about 15 minutes ago just in time to avoid the new snow pack settling onto the Windy City. I’m beat. Need to refresh. Got a “transportable” Starbucks anywhere?
Thanks to both of you! Yes, DB, it’s a wonderful book. Thanks for YOUR suggestions. I’ll keep them on my list!
Great start!!! I’m super excited!
I did not know that Madeleine L’Engle had a book on writing! I will have to add that to my list. Other recommendations? Pencil Dancing and The Right to Write. Both have been inspiring to me. So excited to be on this journey with you.
