Caption This . . . and I'll Story That!

Thanks to my handy-dandy camera phone, I was able to capture this—uh—beauty to share with the world. Prominently displayed in the waiting room of a doctor’s office, I couldn’t miss the three-plus feet of her, dazzling me to distraction. Words escaped me but, thanks to the otherwise empty room, (because, you know, I wouldn’t want to have been mistaken as an actual admirer of this baby) I quickly nabbed a photo for future inspiration.IMG_0945

Here’s where you come in, dear readers. Leave your best caption for this work of art in the comments! Anywhere from one to five sentences or so—be creative 🙂 I’ll choose my favorite and write a piece of flash-fiction using that idea. Sound like fun? Please . . . let the inspiration wash over you as you gaze at the dolphins and ivy and clam shells. It’s really something, isn’t it?

  1. I have an idea, thanks to your blog. We should call it “The Devil’s Peculiar Treasure” LOL.

Thanks so much for the nomination! Those are always fun to do. I will do it in a couple weeks after I do the fiction piece for these poor dolphins.

  2. New idea for the artwork angle: I envision a doctor with a troubled past, who had to flee danger in Florida and is hiding in Texas with a new name, hoping for a fresh start. The dolphin fountain is a relic from his/her past life, reminding them of what they left behind.

  3. The lead dolphin called an impromptu huddle during the middle of the show. “Did you see the size of that last fish? I am sick and tired of doing stupid dolphin tricks for those cheap ass humans. I say we show the land creatures who really runs this show. Do you girls want to join me in a little payback?”

  4. when I look at the lamp, sculpture, fountain… I see 3 dolphins swimming up stream, or against the current. ( Sorta like salmon). They are trying to get to the top , to the light but are unable to reach it. There is a lot of struggle here. I agree with Lisa, there is a lot of frustration in the eye of the top dolphin.

  5. The thing that intrigues me are the lights. I wonder what it would look like with the lights on? So, it looks like the dolphins are searching for something but can’t find it because the lights are off. So, maybe they’re blind? 3 blind dolphins? Looking for…illumination. Or the Illuminati?

    1. Oooh, a conspiracy theory! I like that, Lisa! I think there are subliminal pictures of these dolphins on our ten dollar bills….
      Thanks for the inspiration!

  7. What a fun idea!! 🙂

To me, the top dolphin looks kind of angry and mean, and appears to be brow beating (if dolphins had eyebrows) the lowest dolphin. Furthermore, it looks like the top dolphin is guarding a large pearl. Perhaps it’s a magic pearl the top dolphin found and, overcome with greed, is trying to keep it for himself and uses it to wreak havoc on the dolphin kingdom! Meanwhile, the middle dolphin (a.k.a. the faithful friend) bravely sacrifices himself to protect the bottom dolphin (a.k.a. the hero) from the wrath of the top dolphin during their final confrontation.

Who will gain victory and the power of the Pearl?? :-p

  8. Three dolphin genies frozen into a sculpture who come alive when it’s plugged in (or water is poured over it–it looks like it needs to be a fountain). They grant a “wish” of telling the person who plugged them in whatever he wants to know that he didn’t learn from the doctor (what’s really wrong with me, how long do I have to live, etc.). A mom keeps visiting with her little girl, the girl wanders around and plugs the dolphins in, and the mom asks what’s wrong with her little girl. The little girl has cancer.

    1. Oops, forgot to mention (and this takes it over 5 sentences, sorry) — said sculpture is in a doctor’s office. Hence the granting of knowledge not gained from the doctor.

    2. Well you just wrote the flash fiction piece! LOL. Yes, it is supposed to be a fountain but it wasn’t on. Now I wish I’d turned it on so I could have my wishes granted!
